I have a very strong background in performing arts and throughout the years gained experience in performing; I’ve been involved in many shows during my time at high school. My first main role was performing as ‘Maureen’ in the production ‘HONK!’. As this was my first time playing a lead in a large production, this was when I was able to exceed in developing personal techniques for remembering lines and portraying characteristics. From this point, I went on to play many other lead roles in large scale productions such as ‘Sour Kangaroo’ in the musical ‘Zeusical’. I also performed as ‘Oberon’ in ‘Mid Summers Night Dream’; this was where my acting techniques became stronger, as I was playing a male lead. One of my favourite musicals I have been a lead in was an original play, written by my ex-acting teacher, called ‘Spinning Tales’. I had the privilege to play the well-known character, ‘Cinderella’, in a completely different style to that of the original Disney story, in this uniquely written adaptation. Through playing this Disney character, it provided me the opportunity to meet and greet with primary school children (whilst in character) for a newspaper. I personally enjoyed this experience, as the children put me on the spot with some humorous questions. The most recent play I have taken part in is the West end hit, ‘Oliver’. I also take part in a Halloween show each year called ‘Spooktakular’, which I have performed many dance and musical solos in throughout the three years of high school.
However apart from all the lovely shows, I’ve also performed in a verity of pub and charity events. For example, I was reached out by the charity ‘Gee Wizz’ to perform live music at their charity night. I also have experience in busking in town and city centre, which has helped me develop my confidence.
Since a young age, I have been undertaking exams in music, for instance, I have grades in piano. Furthermore, in a number of my show-cases I have performed using an instrument, for example a piano, guitar or ukulele. On a number of occasions I have also had the opportunity to perform my own compositions to an audience. I am also working towards dance grades at the moment. I have achieved gcse qualifications in drama and music; during this achievement I was able to expand a lot of my techniques and skills, in addition to my acting and performing. I have done a series of workshops with some well-known acting company’s working side by side with the professional actors one agency was Multi Story Theatre Company studding there play of Pericles. One other agency I worked with was Spinning wheel this gave me an opportunity to look inside the work of some grate directing of their take of Casanova.
I want to study performing arts because my whole life I have had a passion for performing and having the thrill of becoming someone else on stage, or relaying a story through music and dance. My dedication and love towards this field makes me sure it’s the career path I want follow in my later years. The pathway that motivates me the most and which I would be hoping to follow is musical theatre. This line of work really inspires me because of how the singing, acting and dancing pulls together to make a magical performance, as well as how one song can portray such emotion through acting and singing.
I want to study at Conservatoire EAST because I have watched many of your productions such as “Full Flight”, which was so well presented. The dedication portrayed and your ability to push your students is very inspirational to a young performer, like myself. Therefore, this makes me want to be a member of your well acclaimed community and represent your firmly established name. I also believe the college environment is certainly suited to me, as I appreciate the way you treat your students in a professional manner and prepare them for their future, through this new learning process.
Leah, your work is articulate, reflective and self-aware. Double check your spelling for “Seussical” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPAG) ‘great’ instead of ‘grate’ and ‘variety’ instead of ‘verity’. Well done!
